How to Install an Electronic Deadbolt With 3 Easy Steps and the Cost

how to install an electronic deadbolt

An electronic deadbolt is a great way to keep your property safe. These locks can be installed in just a few steps and have a range of features that make them a worthwhile investment. However, you need to be sure to install it correctly. Here are a few tips.

Measure the bore hole

When installing an electronic deadbolt, you need to know how to measure the bore hole. The measurements should match the existing door knob. If you are using a pre-drilled hole, you can use the template that came with the lock set. But if you are replacing an existing lock, you need to make your own measurements.

A standard lock has two holes: the cross bore and the latch bore. These holes are drilled about two inches from the edge of the door. Both the cross bore and the latch bore accommodate a spring latch or a sliding bolt. It is important that the latch bore be drilled deeper so that the latch can slide in and out smoothly.

Before you begin drilling the hole, you need to measure the width of the existing boreholes. In most cases, the existing hole will be 2-1/8 inches wide and the cross bore will be about 1 inch wide. Depending on the style of your door, you may need to adjust these measurements.

Measure the backset

Once you have your measurements, you can measure the backset. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the main bore hole. Most interior doors have a 2-3/8″ backset, while most exterior doors have a 2 3/4″ backset.

You need to make sure the hole is deep enough to accommodate the deadbolt and that the resulting hole is clean. To make the hole clean, you can use a hole saw. Alternatively, you can use a drill/driver to create the hole through the door.

If you are installing a new electronic deadbolt, you can use the pre-drilled template provided with the lock set. For a standard deadbolt, the diameter of the hole is usually about 2 1/8 inches, although older homes may have a different measurement. If you have any doubts, you can consult the manufacturer of your deadbolt. Using the right size drill/driver is important because it will prevent splintering of the wood.

During the installation process, you will need to drill out the strike plate. You can mark it on the door to ensure the placement of the screws. Once you have marked the plate, you can attach it with two small screws.

Replace the strike plates

If you’re replacing the strike plates on an electronic deadbolt, you should know that there are three main ways to do so. Knowing all of them will ensure that you do not damage your door.

First, you’ll want to make sure that your new strike plate is the correct size. This will help ensure that it fits in the existing space. You’ll also need to make sure that it has the correct screw holes. Ideally, the holes should be centered over the outline of the door frame.

Next, you’ll need to check the location of the deadbolt. The best way to do this is to trace the edges of the strike plate onto the door frame. In some cases, you might have to remove some material before you can drill the hole. For example, if the catch on the strike plate is wider than the catch on the door frame, you’ll need to use a utility knife to create a recess for the strike plate.

Check for other areas that need attention

Once you’ve got your new strike plate in place, you’ll want to check for other areas of your door that need attention. These may include the hinges and other hardware. Misalignment of these components can lead to kick-in burglaries.

Finally, you’ll need to test the lock. Make sure that the latch bolt and the strike plate are able to align properly. If not, you’ll need to adjust the strike plate and/or the door. Adjusting these can help you reposition the deadbolt so that it matches the strike plate.

Depending on how you adjust the strike plate, you’ll have to either reposition the deadbolt or move the strike plate. While this can be done in a few different ways, it’s important to remember that extreme adjustments can damage the door frame and compromise the safety of your lock.

When replacing the strike plates on an electronic deadbolt, it’s important to make sure that they are properly positioned. Installing a poorly fitting strike plate can lead to kick-in burglaries. So make sure you install a quality strike plate to prevent these types of burglaries from occurring.

Ensure the bolt is sliding smoothly

When installing a new electronic deadbolt, it is important to ensure that the unit is properly installed and functions properly. Several steps need to be taken to ensure that the lock is working as it should.

The first step is to remove the existing hardware. It is also a good idea to mark the location of the existing holes so that you do not drill too close to the walls. After you have removed the existing hardware, you can then start to install the new hardware. Ensure that you use a screw gun and a drill bit to complete the job.

Select which side of door

Next, you need to decide which side of the door will be the home for your new electronic deadbolt. A quick check to see if any of the screws or plates are missing can help you figure out which side you should attach the latch to. You might also want to add a few extra protective paddings to the edges of the frame, to prevent your new hardware from sliding out.

Luckily, most deadbolts come with a set of replacement strike plates. These are the pieces that lock the shim and the deadbolt into place. To install the strike plate, you will need to make sure that the deadbolt shim fits into the slot in the doorjamb. This is easy to do with a little trial and error.

Finally, you need to install the latch. In order to do this, you will need to twist the knob on the handle so that it is flush with the mounting plate on the door. Once you have completed this task, you should tighten the handle with an adjustable wrench.

Although not as a rule, most wood-frame homes will settle over time. If you live in one of these houses, you may want to consider investing in a few extra precautions in order to avoid breaking glass or causing an injury. Also, make sure that you have the right type of doors to match your new deadbolt. Some of the most popular types include uPVC and aluminium doors.

Electronic Deadbolt Cost

The cost of installing an electronic deadbolt depends on the features you’re looking for. For instance, you can find electronic locks with a keypad for an added layer of security. You can also get a lock that has Bluetooth capabilities. These will add to the price, but they are convenient.

If you’re replacing a door that already has a deadbolt, you’ll need to have the existing one removed first. This will cost you around $55 to $125, depending on the company. Then, you’ll need to install a new hole for the deadbolt.

Hire US Lock Doc
