Burglars’ preferences are less outspoken in neighborhoods with higher proportions of rental units. They are also more likely to choose neighborhoods where the population has a lower proportion of non-Belgians. This finding is not accounted for in previous studies.

Some of these factors may influence a burglar’s appraisal of a residence, such as the physical or social environment of the area. Others may be more generalized, such as the expected wealth of the area’s residents.

While some features of a residence are outside of the control of an individual homeowner, measures of neighborhood quality may help to remedy them. One such measure is residential density, which measures the number of residences per square kilometer in a given neighborhood.

In fact, the study found that the crime rate in these developments dropped by roughly one-fifth during the nighttime hours. This may be a result of improved visibility from lights, which might lead to a higher rate of detection from nearby neighbors and police.

Additionally, a related study from New York City suggests that improved street lighting may be a smart way to deter some types of crimes, including property damage. The study examined 80 public housing developments in the city, and found that a modest increase in light levels was able to reduce index crimes by seven percent. However, this measure did not appear to have any direct effect on daytime crime.

The results are mixed, with some claiming that a better lit environment can increase local crime. Nevertheless, the city did find that its own version of the study yielded a more scientific approach to data collection.

Despite the shortcomings of this study, it does prove that better lighting can decrease crime, especially in low income neighborhoods. Furthermore, it can boost the social and economic cohesion of a community. Increasing community pride is a logical reason to spruce up your streetlights. A city that uses the latest lighting technology is a safer place to live, and it will be interesting to see how the nexus of crime and urban revitalization plays out.

Invest in security devices
